Chapter 15

Amara pulled into the driveway. As the garage door raised, she had the hope of locking herself in her room until the morning— or at least until she figured out how to handle the situation. She was still shaken and couldn’t think. She didn’t know how she would end up handling it, but she knew she couldn’t let Ryan see her. He wouldn’t give her a chance to figure things out. He’d just react, like that time he ran into her at a bar and a guy was getting more intimate than Amara cared for. He went into protective mode, ready to beat the guy to death had security not intervened. There was no security to stop him now, which likely meant the result of him seeing her like this would be bad. It might even result in prison time.

Ryan’s car had pulled into the drive before the garage door had completely raised. Her only option now would be to get into the house before him and lock herself away. That would have been acceptable behavior a few weeks ago when he first arrived, but this morning they had taken a huge leap toward reconciliation, and ignoring him would alienate him. It was now a real possibility that they could actually be a real married couple, sex and all.

She would have to dig deep and sell it. What she wanted most was to run into his arms and have him reassure her everything would be okay. But if she did that, Neanderthal Ryan would appear and run off to club somebody. So sell it she would. There was no reason for her to be mad at him, but she was a female and as such didn’t need a reason—at least she knew that’s how he thought. He’d spend the night trying to figure out what he’d done, and she’d have time to strategize.

She got out the car and slammed the door with as much force as she could. She could see in her periphery that he looked toward the sound, but she didn’t look his way. She was prepared to close the door to the house with equal force and exuberance, but it was locked. He was out of his car and behind her as she fumbled to get the key in the lock. He put his hand on her waist and pulled her coat collar down to kiss her neck. The door finally opened, and she flew through before his lips made contact with her. More importantly, it was before he could see the developing bruise on her face. She tried to close the door on him, but he stopped it with his hand.

“Amara. What’s wrong?” His question was met by silence. He tried a different route. “What do you want me to cook for dinner?”

“I don’t want you to cook me anything for dinner.” Her voice was cool with but had an edge to it. It didn’t deter him.

“But I thought—”

She headed up the stairs with her coat and shoes still on, not bothering with her normal ritual.
